Venus May Be Hot with Active Volcanoes

first_imgWe already know Venus is hot from its suffocatingly dense atmosphere, but additional heat could be coming from underground.  Results from the European Space Agency’s Venus Express orbiter suggest that volcanoes have erupted any time between now and 2.5 million years ago, a “geologically recent” time compared to the assumed age of the planet (4.5 billion years).  The evidence consists of compositional differences on three lava flows that suggest they have not been exposed to weathering as long as others.    PhysOrg and Space.com are among the news outlets reporting the findings.  All are mentioning the old conundrum about Venus’s young-looking surface.  “The geological history of Venus has long been a mystery,” Sue Smrekar at JPL remarked.  That’s because the paucity of large craters, and their apparent closeness in age, suggests that the whole planet was resurfaced relatively recently in the last 10% of its history.    That scenario was challenged this month in a paper in Geology, however.1  Hansen and Lopez believe that a rich and complex history is revealed in features named ribbon tesserae terrain (RTT).  They believe the RTT are old and predate the global resurfacing (see summary on this GSA press release).  Since this idea runs contrary to what other geoscientists have been claiming about Venus since the days of the Magellan mission (1990-1993), we will have to wait and see whether their claim can withstand critical analysis.  On first glance it appears to be vulnerable to charges of special pleading that the oldest terrain somehow escaped catastrophic processes that admittedly smothered at least 80% of the surface.  The authors argue that the RTT formed during a distinct ancient epoch on Venus but that individual units, some covering millions of square kilometers, display temporal evolution that “records a rich and prolonged history that awaits discovery.”1.  Hansen and Lopez, “Venus records a rich early history,” Geology, April 2010; v. 38; no. 4; p. 311-314; DOI: 10.1130/G30587.1.There are numerous problems with standard explanations of Venus, and these add to the problems.  The fact that our “sister planet” is so different from Earth is the main one.  No plate tectonics, an extremely slow spin, a choking poisonous atmosphere, no large moon – the list was aggravated when Magellan led scientists to conclude that 90% of the planet’s history had been erased.  Hansen and Lopez are trying to rescue some of that history, but still need to explain what kind of mechanism would smother 80% of a globe the size of earth in what looks like a single event so late in its history.  Imagine something like that happening on Earth.  The energy required to support that kind of catastrophe is phenomenal.  Why did it slow down to a near stop, such that evidence for continuing activity has been difficult to detect?  For a planet smothered in lava it would be surprising not to find activity going on now.  Whatever the history, it is anything but uniformitarian.  There are many questions that deserve a fresh look by clear-thinking scientists not beholden to the moyboy* club.*(millions of years, billions of years).(Visited 6 times, 1 visits today)FacebookTwitterPinterestSave分享0last_img read more

Affordable Color Grading Tools for Shooters and Video Editors

first_imgColor Grading SurfacesThere are plenty of reasons to get a control surface, but picking the right one for your needs is crucial. If you aren’t a professional colorist, it makes no sense to buy a console that costs as much as a car. Here are five color grading surfaces that range from free to just over $1000.1. Tangent Element-Vs App (Free or $100) For most videographers, there’s really no need to build out a full color grading suite. Use these color tools instead — and then put them away when you’re done!Top image via X-RiteCan’t dedicate your editing suite to massive color consoles? These color grading tools are handy when you need them — and can be set aside when you don’t.Color Check Cards and ChartsImage via X-RiteIf you are a shooter and editor, a color card is a great way to save time color correcting your footage. Shooting your subject with a color card in focus allows you to instantly match the true colors of the chart in post. Here are a few of the most popular color cards used by video producers.X-Rite ColorChecker Card — $55ColorChecker Passport Video — $120DataColor SpyderCheckr — $139DSC Labs Front Box One Shot — $300 Image via TangentIf you don’t want a color surface cluttering your desk (or simply don’t use one often enough to justify a purchase), Tangent has created a color surface app for iPads and Android tablets. The digital surface emulates Tangent’s Element line and connects via Wi-Fi, so the tablet and your editing computer must be on the same network for best performance. Another nice feature — you can use multiple tablets at once. The Element-Vs app’s free version will only allow you to use the app for an hour a day, but it’s a great way to test the product. The full version will only set you back $100, and it’s available in the App Store and Google Play Store. It works on every generation of iPad. Android devices must have a screen size of 7″ or more.2. Palette Gear ($199+)Image via Palette GearPalette Gear is a modular control panel (and it’s really awesome). It’s the most customizable tool you can get. The Palette’s functionality isn’t specific to color work — it works with Photoshop, After Effects, Lightroom, Illustrator, InDesign, and Audition. The company is currently in beta for Premiere and FCPX.You connect the core to your computer and then attach modules in any array. You can attach buttons, dials, and sliders by magnetically connecting to the core. There are no specific setups, so you can arrange the tools to your own preference. The core supports up to eighteen modules. The starter kit is available for $199 and it includes the core, two buttons, a slider, and a dial. The $299 expert kit comes with three dials, two buttons, and two sliders — so it’s ideal for color grading, as you can set the dials to control highlights, midtones, and shadows. There is also a $499 professional kit, but since Palette Gear is modular, you can just purchase the individual tools to add on to the starter kit. Buttons cost $29 each, and sliders and dials cost $49.3. Tangent Ripple ($350)Image via TangentAt $350, the Tangent Ripple is a very affordable color grading surface. You aren’t going to find a cheaper, more reliable controller designed specifically for color work. If you ever decide to upgrade your color suite, the Ripple is compatible with the Tangent Element line. It can also be used with the Element-Vs tablet app for added control. The Ripple works with a wide variety of programs — Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve, AutoDesk Flame, Color Finale Pro, FilmLight, REDCINE-X PRO, and more.4. Tangent Element Tk ($1135)Image via TangentThe Tangent Element consoles were designed to be modular systems. Just like the Tangent Element-Vs app, there are four different panels — Tk, Mf, Kb, and Bt.The Tk is the trackerball panel. It has three programmable trackerballs and three programmable rings above the balls. Each ball and ring has its own reset button. There are also two more buttons that function as Alt and Shift.Like the previously mentioned Tangent products, the Tk panel works with Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve, AutoDesk Flame, Color Finale Pro, FilmLight, REDCINE-X PRO, and more.Image via TangentThe Tangent Element can also grow with your needs. You can add the Mf (multifuntion), Kb (knob), and Bt (button) panels to create a full color grading suite. If you’re interested in the entire Tangent Elements panel, you can find bundles starting at $3,320.5. Avid Artist Control ($1499)Image via AvidThe Avid Artist Color panel is optimized for Media Composer, but it’s compatible with other color grading programs like DaVinci Resolve, NewsCutter, Smoke, FilmLight, STORM, and RED REDCINE-X.One of the downsides is that the panel requires an Ethernet connection to function, unlike most of the previously listed tools that connect via USB. That said, the Artist Color does offer a lot for its price. There are three trackballs, three trackwheels, six rotary encoders, and nine programmable soft keys. Are you a shooter or video editor who works with color grading tools in your daily workflow? Rahul Gayle pulverise MI attack post 1974

first_imgMumbai: World Cup hopeful KL Rahul slammed an unbeaten hundred, his first in the Indian Premier League, as Kings XI Punjab also rode on Chris Gayle’s pyrotechnics to post 197/4 in 20 overs against Mumbai Indians here on Wednesday. Rahul (100 not out off 64 balls) and Gayle (63 off 36 balls) joined hands for a 116-run opening wicket partnership to give the away side a blistering start. While Rahul hit six fours and six sixes, Gayle bludgeoned seven maximums and three sixes. Also Read – Puducherry on top after 8-wkt win over ChandigarhGayle was dismissed in the 13th over after which Kings XI slowed down a bit. But Rahul ensured they get to a above par score by smashing Hardik Pandya 6-4-6-6 in the first four deliveries of the 19th over and then hit Jasprit Bumrah for a four and six in the final over as 38 runs came in the last two overs. Gayle, typically, took time to get going and it was only in the fifth over that the legendary West Indian changed gears by hitting Jason Behrendorff for three sixes and one four as the Aussue leaked 23 runs. Also Read – Vijender’s next fight on Nov 22, opponent to be announced laterKings XI were 50/0 at the end of Powerplay with both batsmen looking in ominous form. Rahul hit last match’s hero Alzarri Joseph for a delectable six and a four in the seventh over to continue his good form with the bat as Mumbai bowlers looked rudderless without captain Rohit Sharma who could not play due to an injury. There was no stopping Gayle as he plundered a six and two fours off Pandya in the ninth over which costed the home team 17 runs as Kings XI raced to 93/0 at the halfway stage. Gayle then brought up his 26th fifty in the IPL off 31 balls by smacking Krunal Pandya for a six in the 11th over. Punjab badly needed to break the partnership and Behrendorff did it, coming back to remove Gayle. Trying to hit another six, Gayle holed out to Krunal Pandya at deep midwicket. David Miller (7) did not last long, caught behind by Quinton de Kock off Hardik Pandya as the scoring slowed down. Karun Nair — playing in place of injured Mayank Agarwal — followed suit managing only five runs before nicking one to de Kock behind the stumps of Hardik Pandya. Sam Curran (8) tried to be cheeky but Bumrah got the better off him as the England all-rounder scooped one to de Kock. But just when it looked like Mumbai had successfully reined in, Rahul went berserk in the last two overs. Brief scores: Kings XI Punjab 197/4 (K L Rahul 100, Chris Gayle 63; Hardik Pandya 2/57) vs Mumbai Indians.last_img read more

Will bat for making South Delhi a beautiful place Boxer Vijender Singh

first_imgThe world has witnessed the success story of Vijender Singh in the boxing. He defeated many opponents in the ring as his dedication and hard work earned him respect in the form of Arjuna Award, Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award and Padma Shri in 2010. But this time, the Olympic medallist will be trying his luck in politics as the Congress has fielded him from the South Delhi constituency. In an exclusive interview with Abhay Singh of Millennium Post, the champion boxer says that he is confident of winnning the seat and also bats for making South Delhi a beautiful place for living. Singh promised all around development in the city and says he would also build sporting culture in Delhi. Also Read – Arms supplier arested from RajasthanIn the interview, Singh discussed poll promises for the 2019 parliamentary elections and reasons behind choosing politics. “People are very happy with me. Both the parties will lose this election as they did not fulfil their poll promises,” said Singh. You have been one of the best players in India. How do you feel after joining politics? I am feeling good, we need change, want answers for our questions. I am feeling very excited. I want that every youth of our country should join politics and also raise questions. Politics is a very responsible job. Voters give us the responsibility and we should work for the development of citizens and nation. Also Read – Water supply disruption likely in some areasWhat made you join politics? I used to think about politics after I saw that political dignity is falling below standards. Politicians criticise each other, they never talk about the problems faced by common people. Indian Army should not be criticised. The main agenda should be fulfilling the promises made before the citizens, providing employment, better environment, food to people. Why the people of Delhi should vote for you? I am confident of winning the seat. Yes, they will vote for me as both the governments (whether it is BJP MP or the AAP in the state) they have completely failed to fulfil their promises which were made before people. Both these parties have betrayed the trust of the Delhi people. The current MP also misbehaved with the Poorvanchali people living in Delhi. The voters do not want them, they will lose. Several people are taking selfies with me and I am asking them to vote. What are your poll promises for this election? First of all, the promises made in the Congress manifesto will be fulfilled. The woman safety in the city is a major priority for us. I also want to build sports facilities in Delhi. I will never make fake promises to people. There will be development in the health sector. I will also “regularise” the status of all unauthorised colonies in the Capital. What are the problems you noticed in South Delhi? South Delhi is a very big constituency. There are many problems in the city. In Sangam Vihar, the condition of Poorvanchali people is very bad. Poor facility of water, no sewerage and sealing has affected people’s lives. I will bring some changes in these. My fight is not with the candidates but with the problems of citizens. I will improve the lifestyle of the people in the city. What is your campaign strategy and how will you connect with the people? First of all, people in Delhi are happy with me. I do not believe in show off. I am a grounded person and will meet them. After Congress wins, Delhi people should be relaxed and happy as we will be fulfilling every promise made to them. I do not come from a rich family. I grazed buffaloes. It has been a long journey, and throughout my life I have remain grounded.last_img read more

Ohio State mens hockey inching closer to solidifying its leadership

The Ohio State men’s hockey team may have found its season captains at last. Juniors Curtis Gedig and Travis Statchuk and sophomore Ryan Dzingel served as team captains last weekend for the fifth straight series. The contests marked the first games in Columbus since Dec. 15, and the Buckeyes swept the Lake Superior State Lakers to push their record to 10-11-5 overall and 9-6-3-1 in CCHA play. OSU has been rotating captains for the majority of the season, having different members of the team wear the ‘C’ on their chests essentially every two series. As the second half of the season gets under way and the Buckeyes look to put together a string of victories before the CCHA tournament, coach Mark Osiecki said he is close to deciding which of his players will be captains through the end of the season. “We’re getting closer to potentially naming permanent captains,” Osiecki said Wednesday. “We are sticking with the three guys we’ve had. I think they’ve earned that right.” Osiecki also said Gedig, Statchuk and Dzingel have “done a nice job” during their time as captains over the course of January. Dzingel leads the Buckeyes with 10 goals and is second on the team with 13 assists. Those 23 points lead OSU, which beat Lake Superior State 3-2 on Friday and 6-1 on Saturday. The sophomore forward from Illinois has played in every game this season, and he scored the final goal of the weekend against the Lakers while assisting on two others. Statchuk was a late scratch to the game Friday night after falling ill in the afternoon. He and Gedig are two of five juniors on coach Osiecki’s team who see considerable playing time. Statchuk scored his goal of the season against Northern Michigan on Nov. 16, and he is among the team leaders in face-off percentage, having won 43 percent of his 342 attempts. He is tied with Gedig and Dzingel for most games this season serving as captain. Gedig leads OSU defensemen with seven points and scored his second goal of the season Saturday night against Lake Superior State. The junior from British Columbia said he is happy to finally see some home games on the schedule. “I love the (Schottenstein Center), love the atmosphere,” Gedig said. “It’s good because we don’t have to worry about catching up on school because we are traveling.” Osiecki said he feels confident that the leaders on the team will begin to solidify themselves during this upcoming stretch of games, six of which OSU will play at the Schottenstein Center. “We’re getting closer to having some leaders step up in that (locker) room and we’ve talked about that since day one,” Osiecki said. “Guys need to understand that everyone can be a leader in their own way. That’s starting to emerge a little bit better as we move forward.” Gedig said the team needs to come in with the mindset that “it’s already playoffs” and that they are “so close” to breaking out offensively. The Buckeyes’ nine goals against the Lakers over the weekend were tied for the most they had scored in a series all season. Junior forward Alex Szczechura scored his fourth and fifth goals of the season less than four minutes apart on Saturday. He said scoring that many goals will help the team’s confidence for the rest of the season. “We haven’t been the highest scoring team, but this weekend goals were coming all night,” Szczechura said. “So that’s definitely a confidence booster for us.” The effort, Osiecki said, has been there all season, though. “I think our guys have had the right attitude all the way through,” Osiecki said. “We haven’t had to say much during practice, trying to ask them to bring up the level of competitiveness.” Captains for the upcoming weekend series against Notre Dame will be released Wednesday. The Buckeyes are set to host the Fighting Irish at 7:05 p.m. on Friday at the Schottenstein Center. read more

Zidane distinguishes himself from Klopp
