Noirin O’SullivanTHE police union representing rank and file gardai have also called on the Garda Ombudsman to pull out of its investigation into the death of Ballyshannon sergeant Michael Galvin. The Garda Representative Association says GSOC must pull out of the inquiry.“There are no words to express the pain and trauma of this past week. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Galvin family at the time of such great loss,” said a GRA spokesman. “Garda colleagues in the North West, and nationwide, are dismayed that GSOC be regarded as an appropriate agency to investigate the death of Sergeant Michael Galvin, who was highly regarded by those gardaí who had the honour of working with him.“Sergeant Galvin had been under investigation by GSOC, along with other members of garda rank. We fear that the stress of this made some significant contribution, in whatever way, to this tragic loss.“We fully support our colleagues in the Association of Garda Sergeants and Inspectors (AGSI) in their call for independent investigation of Sergeant Galvin’s death – and this must include the conduct of GSOC in their investigation of Sergeant Galvin.“We need to be sure that this investigative process is transparent, and that the family, friends and colleagues can have absolute confidence that this absolute tragedy has been thoroughly examined, and that lessons can be learned for the future.” Commissioner Noirin O’Sullivan (pictured) will visit the Ballyshannon station tomorrow. (Images: Mathiba Molefe)Volunteers converged on the Ark Animal Centre in northern Johannesburg on Sunday, 8 May, to join a Going the Extra Mile (GEM) initiative to get the tails of dogs wagging again. The visitors put themselves to work cleaning kennels at the centre, bathing the dogs and puppies, and spending time with the staff responsible for the day-to-day running of the animal shelter.Play Your Part, a Brand South Africa programme to promote active citizenship, has partnered with GEM in its events to uplift disadvantaged communities and improve the standards of living for all – animals included. GEM’s work is coordinated through an app that rewards people for doing good.Tracy Otto, the founder and manager of the Ark Animal Centre, said “I think spaces like GEM are fantastic because they’re actually building awareness. For us to get word of our work out there is difficult, but now there’s another outlet which is GEM.“It’s motivating people that wouldn’t normally come here for two or three hours. They see what we’re doing and they realise that there is a need and a way for them to help.”There were smiles all round as visitors got to share in some of the positive energy going around at the Ark Animal Center.ARK ANIMAL CENTREOtto said the main aim of the home is to rescue, rehabilitate and rehome puppies that had been abandoned or brought there by owners unable to care for them.“At the moment I’d say we’ve got about 80 puppies here. Two weeks ago we had about 140, so we’ve managed to home quite a lot since then.“It’s very hard to work here sometimes because you see a lot of things that you don’t want to see,” she said. So what makes it worthwhile? “It’s the end result: when you see a puppy that has come here from a terrible place and it leaves with the best family – and it’s healthy and happy. That’s what drives us, and you can’t walk away from that.”“When you see a puppy that has come here from a terrible place and it leaves with the best family – and it’s healthy and happy. It also fosters a sense of community and makes a positive difference to people’s lives.GEM offers incentives for volunteers through its app. They earn “gems” for every good deed, which can be redeemed for airtime, prepaid electricity and even movie tickets.Volunteers also have the option of donating their gems to the cause of their choice, helping in the day-to-day running of organisations like the Ark Animal Centre.Lisa Wilkinson, one of the volunteers who heard about the Ark Animal Centre through GEM, said she first joined GEM’s activations when she helped raise money for Gift of the Givers during relief efforts after the 2014 xenophobic attacks.“From then on I’ve tried to do a GEM event every weekend that I am available,” she said. “I try and do as much work with GEM as possible because it’s an amazing initiative.”Kimberly Japp, another GEM volunteer at the animal shelter, said even the rewards could do good. “The best part is that you can donate your GEMs to the project that you’re working for, so it doesn’t have to go to you, it can go to them.”Kimberly Japp, another GEM volunteer at the animal shelter, said even the rewards could do good. “The best part is that you can donate your GEMs to the project that you’re working for, so it doesn’t have to go to you, it can go to them.”GET INVOLVED WITH GEMEncouraging active citizenship among South Africa’s people is one of Play Your Part’s key objectives. Share Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest Two weeks ago Wednesday we got 85 acres of beans in. They are not sprayed yet but they are in. The weekend of May 18 we were able to pick away a little on some dry corn fields and we got maybe 60 acres of corn in but that’s about it. We got another 1.1 inches on that next Tuesday into Wednesday. It has been cool but now they are talking about 80 degrees for the next few days. I just checked the ground temperature and it was 60. There is a chance of rain in the next few days then more rain after that. It depends on how much we get if we can keep going or not. It seems like there are pockets where some guys have quite a bit done and there are some places where they haven’t even gotten started. The wheat looks pretty good. It is heading out. The cool, wet temperatures have kept it going. We usually don’t spray fungicide on the wheat but there are a few guys starting to spray. This week a lot of guys laid down their first cutting triticale and it got rained on. They are going to try to get it chopped before it rains again. I don’t think there has been any attempt at dry hay around here. The triticale has been short this year. I talked to a lot of guys and they haven’t gotten the tonnage out of it that they wanted to get. The grass hay is finally growing now that it has gotten warmer but up until now it hasn’t grown like we thought it would. It hasn’t warmed up enough for it to really take off. I don’t know if we have had any days in the 80s yet, maybe one or two. We had a few days last week that were pretty warm during the day and then in the 60s at night, but today might be the first day in the 80s we’ve had. We plant quite a bit around Memorial Day and the week after but if we get washed out again we’ll be getting behind. We are going to mow some triticale down today and then once the dew dries we’ll try to put some more corn in.
