first_imgThe scene of the 2011 riotA JUDGE has given a criminal extra time behind bars after learning that he was out on bail when involved in two acts of criminal damage – one of them involving an attack on a Four Lanterns food outlet.Judge Paul Kelly was told at Letterkenny District Court today that Eddie McLaughlin is already behind bars serving an 18-month sentence for his involvement in a riot at a house party in the town in October 2011. Twenty-one year old McLaughlin was jailed for two years at the Circuit Court after admitting his involvement in the house at The Green, Thornberry.During that incident, 2o Gardai using riot gear had to force their way into the house after being pelted with furniture.McLaughlin appeared in court again today. While out on bail he caused €1,300 worth of damage to a taxi in August last; and on October 16 – just days before he was due in court – he caused €1,600 worth of damage to the Four Lanterns restaurant at Lower Main Street, smashing windows on the premises.McLaughlin was arrested at Market Square a short time later.Defence solicitor Frank Dorrian said McLaughlin was now attending a course at Castlerea Prison to deal with his addiction to alcohol.“As he said to me himself ‘it does you wake you up a bit’,” said the solicitor. He said McLaughlin had become addicted to drink in his early teens.Judge Paul Kelly said all the offences took place while McLaughlin was out on bail awaiting sentence for the house party riot.He added two 3-month sentences to McLaughlin’s prison term – to run consecutively – and fined him €550.MAN WRECKED FOUR LANTERNS WHILST OUT ON BAIL FOR RIOT was last modified: December 16th, 2013 by John2Share this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window) Tags:District CourtEddie McLaughlinletterekennylast_img read more

first_imgChairperson of Inishowen Children’s Autism Related Education (iCARE) and Donegal area representative for the Special Needs Parents Association, Liam Gill, has called for the retention of Special Needs Assistants (SNAs) in Donegal.Mr Gill made the call as Donegal County Council prepares to debate a motion from Sinn Féin’s Jack Murray which calls for the restoration of those SNAs who were cut in the last budget.Mr. Gill said: “With the budget on our doorstep many of us will be affected by general cuts and taxes that affect the rest of the population. “When you have a dependent with a disability who needs therapeutic interventions, educational supports, allowances and where the financial outlay may be greater than that of another, it’s a total nightmare for families thinking of these cutbacks.“I will be extremely shocked if there are further cutbacks to any special needs assistants in Donegal, if what we are reading in the national papers is true it will have severe consequences to our children, the decision will plunge children with disabilities back into 1950’s Ireland.“I appreciate the economic circumstances that have led to the decisions made over the previous years of cutbacks but is there any economic savings to the state overall as the financial burden shifts from the Department of Education & skills budget to the department of social protection with the proposed removal of over 200 special needs assistants?“Over the lifetime of this government, we will see children struggling through our education system unnecessarily and when the country does recover from this recession; those children will continue to struggle as they move through the system onto adulthood. “Irrespective of what increases in support that might arise in future years, the time in-between will be lost for thousands of children both with and without special needs.”He said principals and teachers are already under enormous pressure to differentiate the curriculum for every child and manage with fewer resources overall, but this problem is compounded further when they have to accommodate the substantial learning needs of some children who now will have no SNA support in class due to cutbacks. He said he would like to ask the current government to rethink this budget.Mr Gill insisted: “In my opinion this government has failed, they are still failing and will continue to fail our children.“SNA’s in our schools are vital to all children with and without a disability, councillors have a duty to fight for their retention, we vote for these people and they are supposed to be our voices.”CAMPAIGN LAUNCHED TO SAVE SPECIAL NEEDS ASSISTANTS IN COUNTY was last modified: November 23rd, 2011 by BrendaShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window) Tags:iCAREInishowenSNAslast_img read more

Mbeki calls for stronger, fairer UN

first_img25 September 2003President Thabo Mbeki has called on world leaders, especially those in rich nations, to put their differences aside and practically recommit themselves to the United Nations.Mbeki told the 191-member UN Assembly in New York on Tuesday that the poor expected a united international community to create a just and fairer global village.“The disempowered will continue to look to this organisation, understanding, correctly, that they are too weak to advance their interests singly, outside of the collective voice of the United Nations,” he said.Mbeki told world leaders that the disempowered believed in a collective future of hope, and were also looking to the 50-year-old body to help bring an end to conflicts around the globe, while working towards the Millennium Declaration goals of halving poverty and a lack of basic necessities by 2015.“For us, collectively, to meet these expectations, will require that each and every one of us, both rich and poor, both the powerful and the disempowered, commit ourselves practically to act, in all circumstances, in a manner that recognises and respects the fact that none of us is an island”, Mbeki said.Mbeki said the attack by the US and its allies on Iraq posed many questions over the future and role of the UN as the custodian of world peace and security.“What is decided about the role of the UN in Iraq will … decide what will become of the UN in the context of its Charter, and the important global objectives that have been taken since the Charter was adopted,” he said.Regarding globalisation, Mbeki said the global village was still populated by unequal relations, with the majority in the developing nations still powerless and dominated by the powerful West. This situation ought to be reversed, he said, by levelling the playing field within the UN institution, whose responsibilities have increased since the body was first launched, by reforming its structures and organs.Mbeki warned that failure to transform the UN could result in the world failing to defeat poverty, underdevelopment and the terrorism that threatens world peace.Source: BuaNewslast_img read more

Dwight Howard Admits His Conditioning Has Cost the Lakers

Los Angeles Lakers center Dwight Howard has not looked like the explosive player he was during his time with the Orlando Magic. Howard admitted that his lack of energy and problems with conditioning have cost the Lakers some games.“You’ve got to have energy and I want to bring that energy every night,” Howard told Saturday. “That’s my job. They count on me to be that guy. I know how much more effective I will be when I’m in better shape. And, unfortunately, it’s cost us a lot of games.”Howard acknowledged that he is “not even close” to where he wants to be, but said his conditioning has steadily improved throughout the season after back surgery this summer.“I knew that would be a process. The better shape I’m in, the more active I can be and the more I’m able to do on the floor,” he said. “But it was a struggle at first because I just didn’t have it in the tank, especially on defense.”Howard, who is three-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year, was forced to take off six months from basketball after surgery to repair a herniated disk in his back last spring. He didn’t return to physical activity until just before the Lakers training camp in October.Howard went on to add that it has been hard to get into shape during the rigorous season and traveling with the team. But he said that he is doing everything he can do to pace himself to get into shape so he can be an offensive and defensive problem for their opponents.“That comes with time,” he said. “But I’m not going to get discouraged. Once I get tired, I’m going to ask for a blow, take a break, then get back out there and go hard again.”The Lakers’ front court is currently suffering with injuries to Jordan Hill and Pau Gasol. Hill is out for the remainder of the season with a hip injury and Gasol is out for at least another month with a foot injury.“There’s no subs so until I get in great shape, some times I have to make sure I don’t risk a dumb foul because I’m out of shape or fatigued,” he said. “I usually can play 45-48 minutes without getting tired. Now after five possessions I’m winded. But all that stuff will come.”Howard promised that if the Lakers continue to play the way they are, then he will be in “pretty good shape” in time for the playoffs, if they make the playoffs.Lakers coach Mike D’Antoni has taken notice in Howard’s improvement in his conditioning, which has allowed him to run and execute the pick-and-roll-based offense more effectively.“But now he’s getting in a little bit better shape; he’s getting a better relationship with Steve (Nash) on the pick and roll,” D’Antoni said of Howard. “Now he understands that he can be in every play. We want him in every play and will be big factor in them.”Howard’s play has picked up as his conditioning has progressed. He has had two double-doubles in the last two games. He had 24 points and 12 rebounds in Wednesday’s win over the Boston Celtics and 19 points and 16 rebounds in Friday’s win over the Portland Trail Blazers.Howard will have a chance to continue the double-double streak as they take on the Dallas Mavericks on Sunday and try to inch their way into the playoffs. read more

We got less excited when we found out that this torque-monster of an engine, ideal for doing real work, would only be available in the top Lariat, King Ranch and Platinum trim models.Ford, however, didn’t get to be one of the biggest car companies on Earth by being a bunch of dummies, so it decided to take customer criticism to heart and announced on Thursday that it would add the PowerStroke diesel to the list of available engines on the best-selling XLT trim F-150.”Customers and dealers told us they wanted the diesel on XLT, so we decided to expand the offering,” Dawn McKenzie, truck communications manager for Ford, told Roadshow. “Now, the 3.0-liter Power Stroke diesel will be available on 75% of our offerings, including XLT, which is our most popular series.”What does that mean from a real-dollars standpoint? Well, the base XLT starts at $34,160 while the Lariat trim, before options, goes for $41,700. The King Ranch goes for over $52,000. So it’s a massive reduction in price for someone to get into an F-150 diesel. If you want one, order books are open now. Trucks Diesel Cars Ford Tagslast_img read more
