Minister of National Security, Hon. Robert Montague, is calling on residents of St. Catherine to be on the lookout for wanted persons seeking to escape police dragnets. He said with the security forces undertaking enhanced security measures in the St. Catherine North Police Division, members of the criminal network in the area and elsewhere might want to hide among law-abiding citizens, and decent people need to help in keeping the communities safe from wrongdoers.“If they see strangers moving about in their communities, seeking places to rent, get in touch with the nearest police station to treat with the information, so that the police can assist them to keep their communities safe,” the Minister said.Mr. Montague, who spoke with JIS News, today (March 23), while visiting the Headquarters of the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) in St. Andrew, stressed that citizens must play their part in exposing areas where weapons are hidden and persons who are transporting them away from the communities now under the State of Public Emergency. He said persons with relevant information should call 311, which is a secure medium, and provide the details to the authorities. The Minister said that with four gangsters from Montego Bay in St. James being captured in a St. Catherine community, it shows how criminals are protecting each other.“It tells you that the criminals are networking, they hide each other; and we are asking for the cooperation of business persons with the early closing hours as we move to take back public spaces and restore order,” he said.On Sunday (March 18), Prime Minister, the Most Hon. Andrew Holness, declared a State of Public Emergency in the St. Catherine North Police Division. As at March 22, some 350 persons were taken into custody, with most of them processed. The Minister reported that a number of persons have been arrested on warrants, and more than 40 of the detainees are being held pending processing and “further investigation”.
The world has witnessed the success story of Vijender Singh in the boxing. He defeated many opponents in the ring as his dedication and hard work earned him respect in the form of Arjuna Award, Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award and Padma Shri in 2010. But this time, the Olympic medallist will be trying his luck in politics as the Congress has fielded him from the South Delhi constituency. In an exclusive interview with Abhay Singh of Millennium Post, the champion boxer says that he is confident of winnning the seat and also bats for making South Delhi a beautiful place for living. Singh promised all around development in the city and says he would also build sporting culture in Delhi. Also Read – Arms supplier arested from RajasthanIn the interview, Singh discussed poll promises for the 2019 parliamentary elections and reasons behind choosing politics. “People are very happy with me. Both the parties will lose this election as they did not fulfil their poll promises,” said Singh. You have been one of the best players in India. How do you feel after joining politics? I am feeling good, we need change, want answers for our questions. I am feeling very excited. I want that every youth of our country should join politics and also raise questions. Politics is a very responsible job. Voters give us the responsibility and we should work for the development of citizens and nation. Also Read – Water supply disruption likely in some areasWhat made you join politics? I used to think about politics after I saw that political dignity is falling below standards. Politicians criticise each other, they never talk about the problems faced by common people. Indian Army should not be criticised. The main agenda should be fulfilling the promises made before the citizens, providing employment, better environment, food to people. Why the people of Delhi should vote for you? I am confident of winning the seat. Yes, they will vote for me as both the governments (whether it is BJP MP or the AAP in the state) they have completely failed to fulfil their promises which were made before people. Both these parties have betrayed the trust of the Delhi people. The current MP also misbehaved with the Poorvanchali people living in Delhi. The voters do not want them, they will lose. Several people are taking selfies with me and I am asking them to vote. What are your poll promises for this election? First of all, the promises made in the Congress manifesto will be fulfilled. The woman safety in the city is a major priority for us. I also want to build sports facilities in Delhi. I will never make fake promises to people. There will be development in the health sector. I will also “regularise” the status of all unauthorised colonies in the Capital. What are the problems you noticed in South Delhi? South Delhi is a very big constituency. There are many problems in the city. In Sangam Vihar, the condition of Poorvanchali people is very bad. Poor facility of water, no sewerage and sealing has affected people’s lives. I will bring some changes in these. My fight is not with the candidates but with the problems of citizens. I will improve the lifestyle of the people in the city. What is your campaign strategy and how will you connect with the people? First of all, people in Delhi are happy with me. I do not believe in show off. I am a grounded person and will meet them. After Congress wins, Delhi people should be relaxed and happy as we will be fulfilling every promise made to them. I do not come from a rich family. I grazed buffaloes. It has been a long journey, and throughout my life I have remain grounded.

Small groups in favor of Affordable Care Act protested and marched outside the U.S. Capitol Thursday morning. Photo by Liz Ruskin/Alaska Public Media.Republicans in the House have postponed the vote to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act as they try to overcome opposition from members of their own party. As many as two dozen Republican conservatives oppose the bill on grounds that it doesn’t repeal enough of the ACA. A smaller number of Republican moderates say it doesn’t replace enough. Alaska Congressman Don Young is a little bit in both camps.Listen nowA lot of eyes were on the U.S. House today, but, as Republican factions shuttled to the White House to negotiate, it was a day of waiting for most. The bill could still undergo revision, but so far, Congressman Don Young’s position hasn’t changed since he spoke to reporters early this week. Sometimes Young sounded like one of the moderate Republicans, who say they don’t want to see tax credits reduced for their constituents who benefit from the ACA.“Under this proposal on average each Alaskan on the individual market will lose $10,500 in premium support, and that’s just the individual market,” Young said.As Young explained, under the Republican bill, Alaskans would lose more than people in other states, because the bill would make tax credits the same across the country. Under the ACA, Alaskans get bigger credits to offset the sky-high costs.Young also said the replacement bill would shift too many Medicaid costs to Alaska.“It’s important to remember our costs of medicine are higher and our distances are greater, and I say that expansion without the equitable part of the bill won’t fly,” Young said. “I’ll not support the bill if this happens.”In the same conversation, Young turned rhetorically to the right, sounding more like the conservative faction in the House known as the Freedom Caucus, ruing that the bill doesn’t fully repeal the Obama health care law.“And I still think Obamacare will break this nation,” Young said. Here, Young voiced both ends of the Republican spectrum in the same sentence:“If I think that we’ve come together, the delegation has, on fair, equitable treatment to Alaskans, I’ll probably vote for the bill,” Young said, “but if it’s not there, I’ll vote against the bill because it’s really not the repeal of Obamacare as we originally said we were going to do.”In other words, if the bill makes Alaskans the biggest losers, Young says he’s not voting for it and would rather wipe the slate clean with a full repeal.Republican leaders had scheduled it so they could pass their bill on the anniversary of the Affordable Care Act. Instead, C-SPAN used the lull in Congressional action Thursday to air tape of then-President Obama signing his signature health care act, exactly seven years ago.“The bill I’m signing will set in motion reforms that generation of Americans have fought for and marched for and hungered to see,” Obama said then. The footage showed joyous Democrats congratulating themselves for passing a historic bill.It was definitely not the news of the day.

Before joining the Snapchat maker, Vollero had been working for 15 years in finance roles at Mattel. The replacement of Vollero with Stone comes after Snap had been struggling for months with lower-than-expected user growth numbers and a declining share price. These problems also manifested themselves in the company’s most recent Q1 2018 earnings report, which showed anemic user growth, to the tune of 4 million for the quarter.Following those results, Snap’s stock cratered 17%. At the close of the markets, Snap shares traded for $10.74 on Monday, down more than 50% from a 12-month high a year ago.Monday’s news was greeted with muted optimism by investors, who sent the stock up just 1% in after-hours trading. Some of their hesitation may be explained by the fact that much of Snap’s problems seem to be structural and product-related. The company rolled out an ambitious redesign earlier this year that was supposed to make the service more accessible to new users, but ended up causing an uproar with Snap’s existing user base. All the while, Facebook has been rapidly growing Instagram, a key competitor to Snapchat. Instagram reached 500 million daily active users last summer, while Snapchat has been stuck below 200 million daily active users.CNBC was first to report the news of Vollero’s replacement Monday. Snap is swapping out its CFO: The corporate owner of Snapchat is replacing its current CFO Drew Vollero with Tim Stone, a longtime Amazon executive. The company announced the news in a regulatory filing Monday, stating that it had come to an agreement with Vollero on Friday and that he would continue to serve until May 15.“I am deeply grateful for Drew and his many contributions to the growth of Snap,” Snap CEO Evan Spiegel said in a statement relayed in the filing. “He has done an amazing job as Snap’s first CFO, building a strong team and helping to guide us through our transition to becoming a public company. The discipline that he has brought to our business will serve us well into the future. We wish Drew continued success and all the best.”On May 16, Stone will take over as the new CFO of the company. Stone had been working in various roles at Amazon since 1998. He most recently served as the company’s VP of finance, and before that had served as the company’s VP of physical stores.

Yesterday, the Deliveroo engineering team shared their experience about how they migrated their Tier 1 service from Ruby to Rust without breaking production. Deliveroo is an online food delivery company based in the United Kingdom. Why Deliveroo decided to part ways from Ruby for the Dispatcher service? The Logistics team at Deliveroo uses a service called Dispatcher. This service optimally offers an order to the rider, and it does this with the help of a timeline for each rider. This timeline helps in predicting where riders will be at a certain point of time. Knowing this information allows to efficiently suggest a rider for an order. Building these timelines requires a lot of computation. Though these computations are quick, they are a lot in number. The Dispatcher service was first written in Ruby as it was the company’s preferred language in the beginning. Earlier, it was performing fine because the business was not as big it is now. With time, when Deliveroo started growing, the number of orders increased. This is why the Dispatch service started taking much longer than before. Why they chose Rust as the replacement for Ruby? Instead of writing the whole thing in Rust, the team decided to identify the bottlenecks that were slowing down the Dispatcher service and rewrite them in a different programming language (Rust). They concluded that it would be easier if they built some sort of native extension written in Rust and make it work with the current code written in Ruby. The team chose Rust because it provides high performance than C and is memory safe. Rust also allowed them to build dynamic libraries, which can be later loaded into Ruby. Additionally, some of their team members also had experience with Rust and one part of the Dispatcher was already in Rust. How they migrated from Ruby to Rust? There are two options using which you can call Rust from Ruby. One, by writing a dynamic library in Rust with extern “C” interface and calling it using FFI. Second, writing a dynamic library, but using the Ruby API to register methods, so that you can call them from Ruby directly, just like any other Ruby code. The Deliveroo team chose the second approach of using Ruby API, as there are many libraries available to make it easier for them, for instance, ruru, rutie, and Helix. The team decided to use Rutie, which is a recent fork of Ruru and is under active development. The team planned to gradually replace all parts of the Ruby Dispatcher with Rust. They began the migration by replacing with Rust classes which did not have any dependencies on other parts of the Dispatcher and adding feature flags. As the API of both Ruby and Rust classes implementation were quite similar, they were able to use the same tests. With the help of Rust, the overall dispatch time was reduced significantly. For instance, in one of their larger zones, it dropped from ~4 sec to 0.8 sec. Out of these 0.8 seconds, the Rust part only consumed 0.2 seconds. Read the post shared by Andrii Dmytrenko, a Software Engineer at Deliveroo, for more details. 19Apr Rep. Cox and state leaders promote Sexual Assault Awareness Month Categories: Cox News State Rep. Laura Cox of Livonia and other lawmakers today held a bipartisan press conference at the state Capitol to encourage education, awareness and community involvement to prevent sexual violence and create a safer environment for everyone. April is recognized as Sexual Assault Awareness Month across the country. To highlight the need to address sexual assault, Reps. Cox and Kristy Pagan introduced resolutions in the House declaring April 2017 as Sexual Assault Awareness Month in the state of Michigan and Campus Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month in the state of Michigan. Companion resolutions were also introduced in the Senate.“Sexual assault is a serious issue plaguing college campuses across the country,” Rep. Cox said. “The goal of the legislation that I introduced with Senators Schuitmaker and Warren allows courts to properly take into consideration a suspect’s history of sexual assault as we work to take these dangerous predators off our streets. This legislation will be an important tool in cold case prosecutions, to help hold serial sexual assault perpetrators accountable. I am proud to be a part of the team that’s helping to put an end to sexual assault on and off campuses throughout the state of Michigan.”For the past year, Rep. Cox has worked alongside Michigan’s first lady, Sue Snyder, to develop methods to end sexual assault on college campuses. The Let’s End Campus Sexual Assault initiative was formed by Snyder in an effort to research ways to uniformly work with victims. The program intends to end campus sexual assaults by changing the culture that leads authorities to dismiss allegations, encouraging victims to report the crime and developing uniform punishments for offenders.Lore A. Rogers, staff attorney for the Michigan Domestic and Sexual Violence Prevention and Treatment Board, and Kathy Hagenian, executive policy director for the Michigan Coalition to End Domestic & Sexual Violence, also attended the press conference. About one in six women will be the victim of sexual assault in her lifetime, and statistics show that sexual violence is more prevalent at college in comparison to other crimes.State Rep. Laura Cox speaks to the press about promoting Sexual Assault Awareness Month and was joined by, from left, state Reps. Julie Alexander and Michele Hoitenga, state Sen. Tonya Schuitmaker, state Rep. Kristy Pagan, state Sen. Rebekah Warren and State Rep. John Chirkun.
